Water is a basic human need, and a major influence on human societies, cultures, politics and settlements. Some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity and the environment are directly related to water. For example, over one billion people around the world experience inadequate access to clean drinking water. Aquatic biodiversity is threatened by human activity and environmental change.
Subjects in the Water Geography pathway explore the environmental, ecological, social, cultural, political and economic dynamics associated with water flows, governance and consumption.
Skills associated with this pathway
Graduates of the Water Geography pathway will gain skills in water governance and management, and application of laboratory, computer and field methods.
Recommended course structure
Pathways are designed to help students identify geography subjects focused on a specific theme. Pathways are not formal degrees or qualifications, rather they are recommended groupings of similar or related subjects that students may choose to enrol in if they wish to develop an expertise in a specific topic of interest, or to build a particular skill base for their preferred career path.
