A passion for geology and a commitment to uncovering the Earth’s hidden stories has taken Olivia Kulesza to the rugged landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Olivia, a Doctor of Philosophy (Earth Sciences) student at the University of Melbourne, was awarded the PW Crohn Scholarship whilst completing her Master of Science (Earth Sciences) degree, in recognition of her academic excellence and dedication to geological research.
Having completed her Bachelor of Science (Geology) in 2022 Olivia immersed herself in a Master of Science research project focused on the Alpine Fault—one of New Zealand’s most significant geological features.
“I love nature—particularly the beauty and complex problems it presents when we take a moment to investigate it at a deeper level,” Olivia shares.
During her course, Olivia spent two months conducting fieldwork in the South Island, navigating challenging terrain and breathtaking vistas. Her research maps the complex deformation structures of the Alpine Fault and surrounding glacial terrains, contributing to a deeper understanding of earthquake hazards in the region.
The scholarship has had a tangible impact on Olivia’s studies, enabling her to purchase essential field equipment that supports her research in remote and demanding environments. “The Scholarship is certainly proof that things work out if you put time and effort in,” she says. “It’s a sign of recognition for the academic effort I’ve put in over the years.”
Beyond her academic pursuits, Olivia is enjoyed her time as the President of the Earth Sciences Students Society, fostering community through social and educational events. Her love for the outdoors extends to bouldering, running, swimming, and hiking, and she finds joy in music and literature—recently diving into the Game of Thrones series and attending concerts by Royel Otis and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Olivia is committed to continuing her research and hopes to make meaningful contributions to the field of Earth Sciences. She is deeply grateful for the support of the PW Crohn Scholarship and the donors who make such opportunities possible.
